My journey into the health industry and the area of continuous improvement has all been about timing. I became interested in human biology in high school, but at that stage was more interested in pursuing a career in art. However, after commencing a degree in art teaching I soon realised that while I loved creating artworks, teaching that skill was not what I wanted to do. For a few years I ran the computer system and database of a supermarket but when I heard that a friend had started a medical reception course at the Australian Medical Association (AMA) I knew I was ready for a change. The AMA course was fascinating. It combined medical terminology with accounting and customer service. I enjoyed learning medical terminology, how medical terms are broken down, and that some words originate from Greek mythology! Part way through the AMA course I started work at a small general practice. It was here that I began to apply the theory learned from the AMA modules, and was offered a traineeship that extended the teaching of the AMA course. By the time I left this practice, I was maintaining patient records, typing medico-legal reports, managing accounts of patients and staff, and sterilising medical equipment.
